Isotopic Ratios in Water and the Origin of Earth’s Oceans

Comets contain some of the most pristine ice-rich material left over from the formation of the Solar System. The D/H ratio in cometary water provides key constraints on the origin of Earth’s oceans. Measurement of this ratio in a statistically significant sample of comets is a high-priority goal for the next decade.
