Composition and Dynamical Processes of Ions in Giant Magnetospheres: The Importance of In Situ Measurements for Advancing the Current Knowledge

The magnetospheres of the giant planets are of keen interest owing to their size, fast rotation rate, and strong magnetic fields. Unique plasma sources arise from their moons and rings. We discuss the importance of ion composition measurements in the giant-planet magnetospheres, with particular focus on the ice giants Uranus and Neptune.
