ML & Astronomy: What has happened? Where are we going?

Machine Learning has penetrated most subfields of astronomy. Over the past eight years, the number of papers using such techniques has been increasing exponentially. Is this really changing the way we do research? What have we learned with ML so far? What can be expected in the near future?
