Presentation #416.01 in the session Plenary Session: Looking Forward/Looking Back.
Humans have probably studied the planets since before we were human, but only in the last 60 years have we returned data from deep space. Objects that were once just points of light on the celestial ceiling have become places, each with unique meteorology, geology, and history. Although human bodies have never traveled past the Moon, solar system exploration is human exploration, motivated by our questions and interpreted with our brains. With so many places to explore, what has controlled our choices of questions to prioritize, missions to launch, and destinations to reach, and what can we anticipate for the future?
