Whitepaper #081 in the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033. Main topics: basic research. Additional topics: planetary magnetospheres; space-based missions/projects.
The magnetosphere of Jupiter has been observed by many spacecraft. The results have been discoveries of the global and general properties of the magnetosphere. They have typically raised more questions than they answered. We present some of the outstanding issues in understanding Jupiter’s magnetosphere and argue that this can be accomplished with small, focused missions.
