Some Outstanding Questions on Atmospheric Gravity Wave Phenomena in the Upper Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere

The global extent of atmospheric gravity waves is one of the great unknowns in upper atmospheric dynamics. New space-based techniques have been developed that have the potential of supplying much-needed data on their global distribution. The discussion in this paper is meant to alert the community of these techniques with the hope that one or more could be supported in future space-based missions.
