Whitepaper #221 in the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033. Main topics: basic research. Additional topics: solar physics; user-need-driven basic space weather research.
Observation of Faraday rotation (FR) is the most promising candidate to provide remote-sensing measurements of CME magnetic fields. FR methods have finally matured to the point where they can be used to return the strength and, most importantly, the orientation of CMEs shortly after eruption. We discuss how to continue progressing towards using FR for space weather monitoring and forecasting.
