Whitepaper #248 in the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033. Main topics: basic research. Additional topics: inner heliosphere.
Coronal mass ejections are a cornerstone of heliophysics. It is essential to address the evolution of CMEs in the upper corona and inner heliosphere, independent of their space weather impact through a comprehensive research program. Such a program should include components of data analysis, theory, model and simulation development and lead to new missions and instrumentation.
