Quiescent state accretion in NS and BH X-ray binaries

Accretion powered neutron star (NS) and black hole (BH) X-ray binaries undergo transient outbursts separated by long periods of quiescence. Since outbursts in these systems are typically characterized by increased accretion and high luminosities, their timing and spectral properties have been very well monitored in the last few decades. However, very little is understood about these systems when they accrete at low luminosities. In the case of quiescent state X-ray pulsars, they afford a simple and most direct view of the emission from the NS hotspot without having to delve into complex modeling associated with the effects of increased accretion. Recent works indicate prominent X-ray and optical residual emission from both NS and BH X-ray binaries even during quiescence, which can be crucial in exploring the various emission components contributing towards the accretion process and disk-jet interactions. I will discuss timing and spectral results from analysis of a sample of NS and BH X-ray binaries in their quiescent state using data from NuSTAR and the Hobby Eberly Telescope (HET).
