NICER-enabled discoveries of novel phenomena related to tidal disruptions of stars by massive black holes

NICER’s large effective area in soft X-rays combined with good energy spectral resolution and excellent maneuverability make it the ideal instrument to monitor stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs). This has resulted in some of the best signal-to-noise data of highly-relativistic jets from cosmological black holes after they disrupt stars, repeating partial TDEs where the surviving stellar core orbits the black hole, and candidate supermassive-intermediate-mass black hole candidates revealed via quasi-periodic outflows. I will describe these results and the insights we have gained into jet physics and objects orbiting massive black holes.
