Inter-governmental and Inter-Institutional Cooperation in Preserving Dark Skies

The Flagstaff region of Coconino County has numerous governmental, institutional, and private organizations with diverse missions, but common interests in preserving dark skies for scientific, operational, and cultural reasons. When many organizations are involved, it takes effort in communication and planning to achieve community-wide goals. I will discuss two examples of such efforts in our region. First, is how the City of Flagstaff and Coconino County work together to ensure consistent regulations across governmental boundaries, such as Lighting Codes and Street

Lighting Standards. The second is the implementation of an expansive Joint Land Use Study involving numerous diverse Institutions ranging from local governments, observatories, Northern Arizona University, the Arizona State Lands Department, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Arizona Army National Guard.
