FOSSIL : the size distribution of Jupiter Trojans

We present a study on the size distribution of Jupiter Trojans located in the L4/L5 Lagrange points, focusing on objects with a magnitude range of H=18 (1 km in size). Our investigation by the FOSSIL survey utilizes newly obtained data from the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. We successfully detected 419 Trojans in L4 to limit of mr=25.25 and 648 in L5 to mr = 25.42. Through our observations, we have achieved enhanced sensitivity, allowing for a more effective examination of the population of fainter and smaller Trojans compared to previous studies. Our debias analysis confirms a consistent slope (α~0.3) in the size distribution within the H=14-17 range (1 to 10 km in size), in line with previous findings. Furthermore, the improved sensitivity of our observations enable an extension of the linear size range by one magnitude, down to H=18.
