The Influence of Solar Irradiation and Solar Wind Conditions on Heavy Ion Escape From Mars

We apply a recently presented method to model the interaction between Mars and the solar wind. The method combines in-situ observations and a hybrid plasma model (ions as particles, electrons as a fluid). With this method, we investigate how upstream conditions, including solar Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV), solar wind dynamic pressure, Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) strength and cone angle, affect the heavy ions loss. We also discuss how the method can be applied to magnetic field observations from flybys of unmagnetized planets.
