Calling All Planetary Scientists! Join the Conversations Around Engaging Black and Latinx Youth in Planetary Science

The Planetary Resources and Content Heroes (ReaCH) project, funded through the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s Science Activation program, is developing a model to enable planetary scientists to better engage Black and Latinx youth and families in planetary science. The ReaCH team is designing and implementing professional development workshops at which planetary scientists and informal educators who serve diverse youth work together, exploring and revising and practicing research-based strategies, all through the lens of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEIA). All planetary scientists, including students and early career researchers, planetary engineers, astrobiologists, and more, are invited to join us! Travel stipends are available.

Topics explored in the learner-centered workshops include the role that unconscious bias, authentic partnerships, and culturally relevant approaches play in planning to engage youth and their families. Participants explore a number of hands-on activities and practice their approaches using the activities during a community event held during the workshop.

The team is addressing the challenges of balancing planetary science engagement with exploring what it means to use a DEIA approach. This presentation will provide an overview and discuss the current progress and discoveries that the team is making, and respond to questions about the project.
