Direct Imaging of Exoplanets

Direct imaging offers the possibility to detect and characterize young giants orbiting down to Saturn distance. Such planets provide invaluable information on the formation and early evolution of planetary systems. Key parameters such as effective temperature, gravity, metallicity, abundance ratio etc, can be derived coupling high contrast imaging with spectroscopic capabilities. I will present a choice of results obtained since ESS IV in ground based or JWST high contrast imaging. Recent ones benefit, in particular, from the combination of high contrast imaging with absolute astrometry as well as, when possible, radial velocity data. Such combination may revolutionize our knowledge on the (young) siblings of our solar system giants in the next decade. On the longer terms, super Earths imaging will be in the reach of the ELTs equipped with extreme adaptive optics imagers and biosignatures will be searched on Earth twins with the space project HWO.
