Disturbing ideas: What have we learnt about planet formation from protoplanetary discs?

Are stars ever born in isolation? The answer seems to be: rarely. If so then what are the implications for planet formation? I will discuss recent work where we have tried to understand extreme phases in protoplanetary disc evolution- namely outbursts- and how these tell us a broader story about disturbances and interactions during the time when planet formation takes place. I will discuss discs around binary stars and what we are learning about how planets form, using 3D simulations to piece together the observational puzzle of when, where and how planets are formed so readily in our Galaxy.
