Ergomagnetospheres, Ejection Disks and the Collimation of Relativistic Jets in AGN

In an alternative description of the formation of jets by a spinning black hole in a source like M87, it is proposed that a minor fraction of the power extracted electromagnetically, in an ergomagnetosphere, from the central spinning black hole, is applied to an “ejection disk” to drive a MHD wind which carries off most of the gas supplied at large radius and collimates the jets. Most of the power in this type of source therefore derives from black hole spin and not binding energy of accreting gas. Observed and observable implications of this description will be outlined and variations that may be relevant to other types of accreting source will be described.
