Presentation #406.06 in the session Exploring the MeV Gamma-ray Sky: The Past, Present, and Future.
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are highly luminous extragalactic phenomena consisting of a bipolar collimated jet launched from a compact object. Even 50 years after their initial detection, there are still many open questions about these explosions. COSI’s spectral and polarization measurements of GRB prompt emission may provide insight into their progenitors, emission mechanisms, jet geometry, and magnetic field structure. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of COSI’s GRB science goals.
