Presentation #108.04 in the session SDSS-IVever: Continuing Science from SDSS-IV Surveys.
The Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) used near-twin high-resolution (R~22,000) near-infrared spectrographs to collect 2.8 million spectra of ~680,000 unique targets. Because APOGEE observed from both hemispheres, the APOGEE dataset provides a comprehensive view of the chemo-dynamics of all structural components of the Milky Way. In this talk, I will emphasize the major technical achievements of the APOGEE team that enabled success over a broad range of astronomical sub-disciplines. Then I will highlight some of its enduring scientific achievements while also looking forward to future or ongoing surveys levering APOGEE’s achievements for the next generation of industrial-spectroscopy.
