Yerkes treasures: The largest photographic plate ever used in astronomy

The largest photographic plate that we believe ever was used in astronomy measures 40 x 40-inches (1 x 1-m). It was re-discovered at Yerkes Observatory in 2018 when the Observatory ownership was transferred from the University of Chicago to the newly formed non-profit Yerkes Future Foundation. We will describe this plate’s interesting history from manufacture to use on an eclipse expedition to its unexpected discovery in the observatory attic and our plans for its eventual display.
