The Broad Legacy of George Ellery Hale: Observatories, Institutions, and Civic Development

George Ellery Hale was one of the most prestigious astronomers in of the 20th century, whose work on sunspots established their magnetic origin. Hale’s contributions to science extended far beyond the Sun, as a central figure in the planning and construction of the largest telescopes of the time, the establishment of prominent institutions and organizations for scientific research, and contributions to the development of Pasadena as a civic center. In this talk, I will highlight my grandfathers broader legacy to science and society, including the institutions and facilities that continue to lead scientific discovery today.
